Mormonism Is a Sincerely False Gospel

By Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr.

I am pleased to have engaged in this discussion with Orson Scott Card. I will hope to meet him more personally in the future. It appears that we are not really discussing the same question, however.

My response to the question posed to me remains as it was from the start. Mormonism is not compatible with “traditional Christian orthodoxy.” As a matter of fact, this is the essence of Mormon identity, and Mormon authorities going back to Joseph Smith were quick to separate Mormonism from “traditional Christian orthodoxy” as accepted by the Christian churches.

Indeed, the subtitle printed on The Book of Mormon is “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.” A “testament,” that is, other than that accepted by the historic Christian churches.

The debate has never been about whether Mormons are good Americans or would make good neighbors. I dare say that most American Evangelicals and traditional Roman Catholics would find more in common with Mormons in terms of child-rearing, sexual morality, the protection of marriage and family, and a host of other issues, than they would with liberal Catholics or liberal Protestants. No argument there.

The debate is not over Mitt Romney or his right to run for President of the United States. That is a settled constitutional fact – and a fact for which we should all be thankful. Nor is it about whether Evangelicals should vote for Mitt Romney. There is so much to admire in the man’s marriage and family and leadership ability. This question is very complicated – as is the case with almost all political questions.

The debate is not over the right of Mormons to hold their faith, promote their faith, and spread their faith. That, too, is a constitutional right – the same right that protects the religious liberty of all persons of all faiths and no faith.

For me, and as the question was posed to me, the issue is theological. That is why I cannot answer the question except as I have from the start.

Here is the bottom line. As an Evangelical Christian – a Christian who holds to the “traditional Christian orthodoxy” of the Church – I do not believe that Mormonism leads to salvation. To the contrary, I believe that it is a false gospel that, however sincere and kind its adherents may be, leads to eternal death rather than to eternal life.

Indeed, I believe that Mormonism is a prime example of what the Apostle Paul warned the Church to reject – “a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you” [Galatians 1:8-9].

And thus I must end where I began. Mormonism is not just another form of Christianity – it is incompatible with “traditional Christian orthodoxy.”

  1. Paul was , after all, just a politician. Would he not, therefore, want to say , “My way or the highway”?

Joseph Smith is a false prophet and the whole Mormon Church is a false church.

  3. Kip,

Paul was never a politician. He was an evangelist of the Most High God and His Son Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus was not a politician either and He also said, “I am the way the truth and the life, no one can get to the Father but by Me.” (John 14) I think that Mormonism diverges from the truth. They believe several things that are never mentioned in Scripture such as women cannot be saved until their husband takes the veil off their face after death (why they believe in polygamy), they believe the males can become gods of their own planets such as Elohim has of earth, they believe Jesus and Satan are brothers, thay believe Jesus came to America to evangelize the Indians, they mention tools and animals in the book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price that were not in existence in America at the time, they believe Elohim and Mary had sex to give birth to Jesus, they believe that black people are eternally cursed… In the Mormon Bible it states several places that “their skin was darkened because they were cursed…” (That is why you never see a black Mormon) –> along this line they say their prophets are never wrong, yet they are trying to say that they were misunderstood to allow blacks in the church now… I don’t think so. Read Brigham Young – very much against blacks.

The God of the Bible told Abraham that every nation, tongue and ethnicity would be blessed through his seed. (Genesis 12:1-3, Old Testament) Paul states correctly 2000 years later that Jesus is that seed that will bring the blessing of salvation to every nation, not just Jews but Gentiles (Us) as well. (Galatians 3, New Testament)

My call to you Kip is to abandon the notion that all truth is true and abandon the Postmodern preupposition that there are no absolutes. You must believe in God’s Son only for eternal life. I know this sounds narrow minded and it is. Jesus said the way is narrow and there are Few that find it. You must repent of your sins and believe that Jesus was risen from the dead and confess with you mouth that Jesus is Lord and you too, as I have and millions of others, will be saved. If not, you are in peril and stand condemned. Do not reject God’s child… you must receive Him (Jesus) to be apart of God’s family.

If you refuse to support the pope on small issues like abortion, you have to agree to higher, more secret and military goals as absolution. Giuliani did not fight the mob, he corraled it away from drugs and into Wall Street, where he diminished the Jewish influence to make room for Dick Grasso, mafia boiler rooms and money laundering. The mafia was always the elite gladiators of the molesting fascist popes. Catholics are the most dangerous for our democracy. Roberts and Alito lied to get confirmed. Look at the difference between Ashcroft, whose offbeat religion everyone feared, compared to Gonzalez on the Comey affair. Our litigation explosion began with the election of JFK. They love casuistry. Every martyrdom of Christians under the Romans required a civil lawsuit! They love litigation yet Christ himself Mt 5:25 warned agaist their litigiousness.
