How God Lovingly Elects! (From John Piper’s Sermon on John 3.16, Part 2)

February 18, 2010

1. Deuteronomy 10.14-15 – Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. Yet the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day.

God did not offer anything to Israel before He made them His own. He made them His own unilaterally. He took them for Himself without qualification or negotiation. He sovereignly conquered the moon worshipped Abraham and took Him and loved Him.

Deuteronomy 7.6-8 – “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. 7 It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Why did God love them? Because He loved them, period. There was no merit in Abraham.

2. John 3.8 – The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

At the will of the wind we are saved. We don’t make it happen anymore than we make the wind blow. This is Great Love! (Ephesians 2.4 – But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved…)

You faith, love, repentance and obedience are not the work of a dead man, but the work of a living being. If all you know is an offer, then you don’t know enough.

1 Peter 1.3 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again…

Do you know yourself loved like that? This is a sweet experience.

3. Jesus, who are your sheep? John 10.25-26 – Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not part of my flock. My sheep hear my voice…

God makes us a sheep so we can believe. This verse does not say, “You are not part of my flock because you don’t believe.” It says the opposite: You don’t believe because your not part of my flock.

John 10.11 – Jesus lays down His life for the sheep. Who are the sheep? Those who are His. The Cross secures for the sheep their salvation.

God knows who are His… and the death of His Son secures their salvation.

John 10.27 – My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

This is how you know who are Jesus’ sheep. This is security and precious assurance.

Why do the sheep come? The Father has chosen them and given them to Jesus.

John 6.37, 44, 65 – All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. …No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day…. “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

This is why we come!

Why doesn’t everyone believe in John 3:16? John 3.19-21 – And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

They hated the light is the answer! Family, sex, money, entertainment, movies, x-box, sports, etc. was more attractive than the light of Christ.

Why does any of us receive Jesus as our Supreme Treasure? Smarter, more Spiritual? No!
God’s Grace Alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t Rob God of the Greatness of His Love in Your Life!!!!!!
