Al Mohler: It’s Getting Dangerous Out There — A Preacher Is Arrested in Britain

May 5, 2010

We are witnessing the constriction of Christian speech and the criminalizing of Christian ministry. The Bible clearly condemns homosexual behaviors, and the Christian church has been clear about this teaching for twenty centuries. But now, the statement that homosexuality is a sin can land a preacher in jail.

It is troubling to hear that an arrest has been made on such grounds–especially in Hyde park! Maybe there is more to the story–if not, this preacher has good grounds to make a solid case.
As a comment on your post, Christian theologies and practices have always been changing and contextual to their surroundings. Just in the first centuries, there was great debate about Paul’s discussion of whether it is better to marry or not. Celibacy, slavery, marriage, divorce, child rearing, how many children to have, use of condoms, a lot has changed over the years for many Christians.
While as a whole, forms of homosexuality and same gender love have been publicly decried, its also very important I feel to examine the truth of what was occurring ‘behind closed doors’.
It seems to me that perhaps we are not seeing an increase of homosexuality, but there is safety now to live one’s life without fear of corporeal punishment or worse. As a larger society, we do not need police to step in on theological matters–we are already moving on to follow Christ into bigger and better things. Church by church, family by family, we are re-evaluating the human-made doctrines and previous beliefs about gender and sexuality.

    Ryan,

By what standard shall we “re-evaluate” previous beliefs about gender and sexuality? Real Christians don’t have their moral standards “change alot over the years”, for the Word of God is eternal, and His stand on homosexuality is quite clear.
