Thabiti Anyabwile: Does Calvinism Create Tensions in the Church?

October 13, 2010

There are those who are up in arms with fear because they neither understand nor have attempted to understand what “Calvinists” or “Reformed” persons believe. So, a lot of fear and “boogey-man” misrepresentation exists. On the other side, there are those Reformed types that turn everything into a battle over this or that pet doctrine and misrepresent the understanding of their Arminian brethren.

    Say What???

“…Calvinist seminary graduates keep their beliefs below the radar when they’re out applying for work, only to uncover them once safe in a job.”

That statement, along with the title, speaks volumes about the state of the SBC. Why is it that Calvinists are the ones who cause tension? I guess the Arminians have nothing to contribute to this, eh? Why is it that Calvinists have to “keep their beliefs below the radar” in order top get jobs in the SBC? The message is clear, if you want to be SBC, either be an Arminian, or shut up.

I am reminded of a wedding that I attended a few years back, where someone approached me with a book that was to “help me resolve the debate between Calvinism and Arminianism”. While I appreciate the effort, I could help but ask why, out of the 300 Christians in that building, he chose the one Calvinist to approach with this book. Why didn’t he give it to one of the many Arminians that were there? Wht don’t the Arminians need to resolve the debate? Why just the Calvinists?

I believe that there will be a split in the SBC soon, and that’s a good thing.

True. When I debate or discuss, it is always the Calvinist who is deemed defensive. The other party will exagerate the issue… if you take Calvainism to its final conclusion, then you don’t evangelize! They won’t agree to the fact that Armenianism carried to its full will be Palagianism. It is a ridiculous debate.

The tensions come from stupid, sinful people. If we would simply listen to one another and submit to the Bible, we would all land in the right place… eventually!

I didn’t become a Calvinist overnight. I did so by reading the Scriptures. So “Calvinist” yes only because it is Biblical. People hate being out of control of their lives or even admitting that they are…. so they will defend their Armenian or semi-Armenian positions to the end.
